When dealing with computer problems you need to be as specific as possible, otherwise it's very difficult to help you. "Junk sites" isn't very specific... are you getting pop-ups? Are these sites on your homepage (when you first open IE) ? When is the problem occuring, and what is occuring?

One solution you can try is to upgrade your Internet Explorer, at www.microsoft.com/ie . A re-installation of the browser may fix the problem. Another solution is to click on Tools -> Manage Add-ons... and uncheck everything, close the browser and re-open it. See if that works. If it does, go back into that screen and check one, restart the browser, and see if the problem comes back. When the problem returns, the last one you checked is the cause.

If all else fails, do a search on Yahoo! or Google with the exact text in the error message... usually you will find a message board thread with a solution, but it takes research.

Scan once more for the bugs, then install some useful antivirus software.
I used Norton Antivirus but it was too expensive and it would not block all trojans. In a week between Norton and "something affordable" a bug killed my hard disc. From then, I use Avast (free!) and I'm happy as a clam. It works great, and I had no problems so far.
And if you used Internet Explorer - get rid of it, and download Mozilla Firefox. IE and viruses go together like twins - where's one the other's sure to follow.

Good luck!

Download adaware from download.com and hijack this which gives you a report of all potential threats on your system and then you can post that report on a mesage board which should give you a solution to the trickier spyware you can't get rid of. It is always a good rule of thumb to use 2-3 antispyware programs because some detect more then others.

You need to get rid of whatever spyware program you have & Download : Spybot Search & Destroy Anti Spyware 1.4 , get its latest updates, run a scan, get rid of the culprits by clicking on " Fix problems". It might prompt you to restart your computer, depending on what the spyware was. It's the best program out there for what you want. Get new updates everyday, otherwise the program won't recognize new threats.

It sounds like you have a browser hijacker. These are called Browser Help Objects (BHO) - the good ones. The bad ones are of course hijackers. An Active X item is entered in the Windows Regisrty - is a place where they are discovered...
