Should I stick with AVG Free or am I better off with the Professional edition? Also, what are the advantages over AVG Free? If I purchase AVG is it safe to purchase it digitally? (over eBay)

Thanks in advance

Hello:

I would not buy AVG on eBay. I would buy it directly from Grisoft... http://www.grisoft.com

As for whether or not you want to buy it or keep the freebie, you can do a direct comparison right here:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

Cheers!

Update:

I do not personally agree with the first poster. I have had problems with McAfee that forced me to avoid it. I most definitely recommend staying with AVG. Do the comparison between the free and commercial versions...see link above comparing the two.

Update 2:
Gerald309 is incorrect if he's referring to AVG Free. It DOES have a completely functional runtime antivirus protection built-in. And it works. Girsoft has free antispyware protection with runtime protection as well.

About the "Free Stuff" - you are not protected !
http://www.bluecollarpc.net/about.html

Many people everywhere at boards and forums and groups always ask about "free protection" available to download and use. Sure, that's fine, because there are many genuine real programs and utilities available for free. But you must know the difference and dangers - using paid programs and free programs. This is the same for antispyware as well as antivirus software programs. Reasons for those seeking these softwares free may be being sick of shoveling out the money after realizing inferior product purchases, short or tight budgets, or no online purchase abilities, and the best reason - to have back up programs if the primary gets 'hit'. Whatever the reasons - you must know the differences in free and paid programs in antivirus and antispyware softwares, because with free stuff you are not protected ! (The free ones only scan and remove if able). Read...

About "free stuff"....
You need to understand what "real time protection" is. None of the free programs offer this with the exception of the real time active shields in the free Microsoft Windows Defender (antispyware) program. In other words, without real time protection (which will block viruses from installing and most adware and spyware or at least present a warning for blocking) your computer will get infected first. After that, the free programs in antivirus and antispyware will allow removal after a full scan and detection. The problem with that is corruption of files or softwares - as well as the personal information already leaking (being transmitted back to cyber criminals). In severe threats in many cases your free programs will be blocked from even operating or retrieving update definitions. Paid subscriptions activate real time protection for antivirus and antispyware programs that have active shields like Webroot Spysweeper or Trend Micro Antispyware. Note that only the top sellers in antispyware actually have real time shields - the others are just scanners basically. .....

the only place to obtain the pro version legally is from grisoft's own site..when you say from any other site BUT grisoft, it does sound dubious..

I use the free version anyway, which i find good enough, as i'm behind a hardware + software firewall and there are a few other free tools you can use such as mcafee stinger.

and nortons does still exsist, its the most popular one, sadly thats the one a lot of people seem to write nasty things for.

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!

AVG Free is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

In test,

after test,

after test,

etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG free fares poorly.

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

AVG. = Average, at best!

There are much better free alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Active Virus Shield:

The pro version has more configuration, but they both do the same. Stic to the free, the reason for the pay versions is due to business licencing.

AVG Free and Pro are the same. They use the same definitions. If you want the best,
use McAfee (1st)
ZoneAlarm (2nd)
Kaspersky (3rd)
Panda (4th)

Norton doesn't work. I dunno why the company even exists
