My friend and I live in the state of Oklahoma, and he has a handgun that he'd like to give me as a gift. I'm deploying in August, and my wife and I would like to have it for home defense, so that she feels a little safer. I'm only 20 years old, though.

Everything I've read in the laws say that this is legal, but I'd like to see if someone knows something that I don't. Everything I've seen says that FFLs can only SELL a firearm to someone 21 or older, but private gifts and such are only restricted to 18 or older.

You are okay if you are over 18 and are not a felon.

This was an old loophole that allowed me to get my first handgun at 19.

You need to check with either the local state police-- or a local attorney to check your states laws.

Also, to make sure that the loophole in the Youth Safety Hangun Act-- was not closed. That loophole being the ability to give a handgun to a person under 21 but over 18.

In Virginia-- there was until recently a similiar loophole that allowed people between 18-21 to posess alcohol-- as long as a person present was 21+. However, they just changed it to require a blood relative of each underage person to be present.

As long as you are at least 18 not a felon and state law doesn't require registration which I think Oklahoma doesn't you don't have a problem. I'm military too man, good luck Go Army!!

Yes you can as long as you reregister it in your name. Now if you have been convicted of a Felony, you will not be able to register the hand gun in your name and if your caught with that hand gun, you could recieve up to five years for Possession of a Handgun by a felon.

As far as I know.
Now, if you lived in a Nazi Blue State, maybe not.
(The gun owners in Blue States don't have much guts.)
OK is a great state.
Good Luck, and God Bless.

As for your wife make sure she takes lessons in safety and how to shot.

Look in the telephone book for places that teach responsibilities about owning a gun.

Since you wife is over 18 she will not have difficulties.
