Well, obviously I would take it to the bank- but sometimes its easier to just come on here and see if anyone ever knows any simpler solutions to my problems- rather than stating the obvious. Its always worth a try, I think.

Assuming that it is a Series 1996 or later $50 bill, find yourself a black light. Mall Gift shops like Spencer's have them. the Mylar thread (a difficult feature to fake in itself) glows under a black light. There is also lettering on the mylar thread (USA FIFTY).
With earlier notes, you have to go with the detector pen mentioned previously.

Watermarks are only present on newer bills worth $5 or more. Because the government doesn't want to redesign $1 and $2 bills due to a low risk of counterfeiting, they don't have any of the newer security features found on larger bills. There is almost no way of knowing.

Look at the 50 in the corner. Tilt the bill. It should change colors from green to black. (easiest, quick way)

Why don't you just go to the bank and ask them if it's real? They do that sort of thing ya know?

Take it to a bank and ask for change. If it's fake, they'll tell you.
