I am buying a new home with online/internet access in every room. When do we expect this trend of wiring homes to be over with? What will the alternative be?

Ethernet will be around for a long time yet (I hope, I make a living at it) because it is so cheap to impliment. Fiber, howerever, would be the next best. Much faster, and heaps of bandwidth. The equipment will cost more, of course.
Wireless is another alternative. However, wireless access point placement is critical. Heat ducting and pipes in the walls both deflect/absorb the signal. Wireless speed slows with a reduction in signal strength; The farther you are away from the AP the slower you go. Even with a perfect signal though, you're still not as fast as with a wire.
For your money, though, you'll want to stick to GB ethernet cabling and routers/switches. 10GB ethernet should roll around soon, and be common place.

-best luck

Actually, neither wireless or ethernet cables will be viable for long. I'm the network admin at my job and I'm using powerline networking quite extensively. Basically, it sends the Internet through your electrical wiring. All you do is plug in a receiver at any electrical outlet and you are instantly online. No more running cables or worrying about signal loss. It is much faster than wireless and, while not yet as fast as a wired connection, it is getting better.

Also, some cities are now testing out powerline networking over actual powerlines and are supplying residents with high-speed net access through their outlets. It's something to keep an eye on!

ehternet has one MAJOR advantage over wireless systems, unless your phsyically attatched to the network or at the pc its on there is no way to get into it.

It will be around for a long time for many reasons. just the varientions / speeds will change... first it was 10base T.. which is 10mbits a second.. then eternet.. 100 bits..... now its gone onto gigabyte ethernet 1000 bits.. so it will remain , just the speeds will also increase =)

not so soon
no matter what cable ethernet is fastest and trouble free
wireless is high tech but troublesome
read neighbours wireless and interference
This is an issue that should be the least of your concerns
Wired cable is the fastest , least troublesome no matter what

well, rumor has it that sometime late next year, Internet 2.0 *it has no official name yet* will be released and that will rival T3 speeds and E1 using special fiber obtics or the such. Thus, making regular ethernet connections as obsolete as Dial up.
