I wanna get a Dx10 card capable of running crysis mid-high with decent frame rates, naturally the 8600gts comes to mind. theres only 1 four pin power connector left though, and it takes two for the new PCI-e power connector conversion cable. so can I just dog it and plug in one? it is the 8600 so its not going to be sucking alot of power, and I was reading a review on pureoverclock.com which said even on load their comp wasn't drawing over 162 watts. I have an atholon x2 3800 too, which probably isn't as power hungrey as there Intel extreme whatever. any suggestions would be great thanks!

8600GTS cards require a pretty beefy power supply, EVGA, for example, specifies a 400-Watt supply:

The Dell E521 comes with a 305-Watt power supply:

So yes, you should upgrade the PS if you're getting that card.

shall we be sparkling here. The E521 is a BTX format. If Dell are following the BTX specifications you will desire a BTX PSU as an ATX won't have the final motherboard connector. you may get ATX/BTX properly matched PSUs even regardless of the undeniable fact that. perhaps thats your ideal wager it is why upgrading those subject-loose setups is from time to time no longer probable fee-powerful, once you have upgraded the PSU, RAM CPU and video card its very almost as low priced to get yet another base unit in case you google on BTX + PSU you will get a great number of hits

400 watts is probably what u want. but you also need to check to see if the 8600 card comes with a 6pin adapter on it. some cards need the extra power directly from the psu. the power supply is self can be 600watts and still not be the right psu for the card. check the manufactures.

get a new psu, those cards are power hogs they need lots of power, at least 350 watts, i think

In my opinion, for better framerates and settings go with a card with a bigger memory interface, the 8600gts is only 128 bit, thats low, mines 256, id go higher, ATI cards are best for the higher interface, i have a ATI Radeon x1900 gt and it runs everything maxed with high frame rates, check out the x 1900gt, its about the same price if not cheaper
