MAGOTS ONLY EAT DEAD FLESH AND MUSCLE.
yOUR COUSIN SHOULD BE FINE BUT MAKE SURE THE AREA IS KEPT CLEAN AND USE NEOSPRIN ( TRIPLE ANTIBIOTIC) IF THERE IS AN OPEN AREA SUCH AS A CUT MAKE SUE IT DOESN'T GET INFECTED.

Maggots eat dead flesh, not healthy flesh. Gross as it sounds, they are being used by doctors in cases where they are having trouble getting a patient's wound to heal. (No, this is no joke, nor am I "talking through my hat" - it's fact. I've seen a couple of documentaries and articles on it.) Maggots can get into things fast. If it's hot weather where you are, that may have sped up the action in the wound and a day is possibly enough for this to have happened. I've seen maggots get into things quite quickly on a hot day. What I don't know is whether all maggots do the same thing, that is, eat the dead flesh and then drop off. Also, I don't know how harmful this will be to a creature as small as a rabbit. If you can't afford vet fees and don't want to humanely kill the rabbit (and let's face it, who wants to kill their pet unless it's necessary?) ring a vet and talk to them about it - they may be willing to give you some advice on the phone about it.

No, maggots usually eat dead or rotting flesh.
They usually leave healthy flesh alone.

But, gross...yuck!
