Angels can be VERY aggressive. So if you are going to put new fish in the tank, make sure they are similar in size. It's best to put all the fish in the tank at the same time so they dont have the chance to become territorial.

I assume you are talking Tropical fish as opposed to Tropical Marine fish - if so Angel Fish are fairly peaceful except if you get a breeding pair and that is fairly uncommon.

They are therefore a good community fish and will mix with all the commoner types of community fish - guppies, platies, zebras, neons, cardinal tetras etc.

The rule of thumb generally is the size of the mouth of the biggest fish in your tank - allow for the fact that your fish will grow and eventually have bigger mouths - fish being fish will eat each other if they can swallow another one.

Angels are very graceful but relativelly slow moving fish and if you put tiger barbs in with them ( care with any of the barbs ) there is a possibility of the barbs nipping at the fins and you finish up with rather tatty looking and unhappy angel fish.

If you want a mixed collection of fish instead of mixing them from all over the world why not concentrate on fish from the Amazon and South America. Apart from Angels all the tetras come from that area and there is planty of variety there. But at least 3 of a variety as most fish shoal together and feel happier that way.

Finally find a good dealer with a good reputation - he wont want to sell you fish that dont mix well.

Good luck

One problem with angel fish is there from the cichlid family. As with all cichlids, they are very territorial. Which means if the angels are in the tank first, they will attack other fish, defending their territory. If the other fish are there first, they will not bother them.

It is usually best to introduce the angels last in a community aquarium. With that said, I have had angels with bala sharks, black skirt and red skirt tetras, and danios in a community aquarium. I even had to add 30 or so guppies to the mix a couple of years ago when I had a friend watch my fish when I was moving. No problem.

I think a tank with only angel fish is beautiful. Tropical fish that are not aggressive can get along the best in a tank with angel fish. I have seen some tropical fish fray the angels tail. Guppies, neons, black mollies, and zebras mix well with angels.

If you use this link and click on "angelfish" it give you two fish communities with which angels will be compatible. Click on either link, and you get the list of fish in that community.

Obviously, there are to many to put into a single tank, so you'll have to choose one(s) you like based on the size of your tank, how many fish you already have, and schooling tendencies of some of the choices.

A peaceful, not aggressive fish could probably live with Angelfish.

They tend be be somewhat aggressive, so try to pick a fish that isn't too small.

i like other cichlids with angels -- rams and apistos on the small side and festivums and severums on the larger side. there are even really cute angel/ram hybrids out on the market now.

really small fish like tetras will end up food.

tetras should be fine. Freshwater angels aren't aggressive if they all have enough room in the tank.
