You need the salinity to be different enough from freshwater that the parasites have trouble with maintaining their water balance in their bodies. Fish are adapted to take in salt, but the parasites lose water and essentially "dry out" and die.

Did you just put in one tablespoon total? That's how your question sounds. That may not be enough, so I'd suggest adding at least one more tablespoon to get the "half dose". Even more would be more effective, but you'll have to add it carefully, because the loaches are a type of fish that don't tolerate salt well. After you've added the second tablespoon, what a while and add a teaspoon more. Keep adding a teaspoon every half hour or so until you've added 6 teaspoons (this will be a full dose), or until you fish become very agitated or stressed. At this point, you'll need to stop. Even though they are relatively intolerant of saly, I've kept them in higher salt concentrations than 1 tablespoon/5 gallons if the salt is added slowly.

If you have the 4 tablespoons (a full dose), that should be enough. (BTW, ocean water is more than 1/2 cup per gallon of water, so the dose you're adding isn't that much.) And measurements should be by level spoonful.

you should dissolve the salt before you put it in and go slowly -- most fish are fine with one tablespoon per 5 gallons (i don't do the rounded part).

Get a cup fill it with aquarium water, pour the salt in, shake it until they are dissolved and pour it in your tank.
