I usually keep up with the NY Times Bestsellers List published weekly. Sometimes I will watch it for several weeks to see if a book stays there before I get it. That means that other people have read it and raved about it to their friends who have in turn bought it. If it's just there for 1-2 weeks, don't bother. That means a whole bunch of people bought it, probably because it's by their favorite author, but didn't like it.
Sometimes a book catches my eye because of the cover. Then I read the flap and back of the book to see what it's about. If the topic sounds interesting, I will read the first couple of pages. If it grabs me then I take it home. If I yawn I put it back.

Read the brief description of the storyline which is usually found on the book cover flap, either in back or in front when opening the book. The picture is a "grab you" just like movie posters, and just like them, ususally not indicative of what is inside. Also, if you are always going into the same area (like history, mystery, romance, spiritual, etc) then note that and avoid those areas for a while because it may be that subject just doesn't spark your interest. You can also search a libray's index of books by subject to help narrow down the kinds of books you are browsing through. If you don't know how, ask the librarians, they will show you.

i do research on the internet first. i look at best seller lists and such and try some out. i don't like everything i get but usually out of 5 books by 5 different authors i will find atleast one author that i really like and with any luck they have multiple books so i will have something to read for a while. if you go to amazon.com and type in a book that you like they will give you recommendations based on what other customers have purchased.
good luck!

get suggestion for a good author for your age.
Try searching books written by that author./
If you find books by him/her, then read the gist or the summary given at the back and then choose the book which is you think the most attracting
But you need to know which genre attracts you better.

Sometimes I use the search computers for subjects/authors I'm interested in.I've been there enough times,I just go to the non-fiction sections and look in the areas where there are cook books, biographies, history and look around.

Look arround, shop some, read the back cover. Skim a little of it. Eventually, one will seem to sort of glow and become obvious that its the right book.
I've used this hundreds of times without it failing more than a few times.

I kiss a lot of frogs before I find my prince!
I find that by going to university libraries there is less chance to find a bad book, strictly by the nature of their organization.
