I'm not sure how it works. I work for the government (county). They allow their employees to take family/maternity leave, obviously. The employee is not paid for the time they are off for maternity leave, right?

That depends on if they allow you to use some of your sick leave or not. If you can manage to use sick leave for some or all of your maternity leave, you would be better off financially, since you would still be getting a steady paycheck.

There is no right to unpaid leave. You will have to ask your employer- I have known one case where the person took this kind of leave and whilst away the employer simply did away with their job, then told them they should have read all the conditions and that the job was not guaranteed- all that was guaranteed was that they could apply when they came back IF there were any vacancies!!!! As to your reasons, has it not occurred to you that you will just be in the way and that a very sick man will not want loads of people around him? It is very good that you care, but there are many other, better ways to show you care about him.

As far as I know it is considered unpaid time but sometimes the government does things a bit differently than the civilian world (I'm familiar with the feds because of my mom being a retired federal employee and I get my medical coverage under her). So I would recommend getting in touch with OPM to find out what the policy is for the federal government. Their website is: http://www.opm.gov

They have an FAQ section on the site that is pretty good and also in another section they have a section for e-mailing the appropriate depts with questions too on there if you have a problem accessing them thru the phone.

I worked for a city government and anyone could take maternity leave and use their sick time and if they ran out, they could opt to use their vacation time until it was gone. After that, they had to go into FMLA which was unpaid time off.

Check with your payroll people and see what the contract says for your area and have them write it down for you so you can refer to it while you are off (if you need to, of course :)

Congratulations on the baby :)

The federal govermnent mandates that companies allow their employees 6 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. Other laws and policies vary from state to state and company to company.

Not usually. Your job is protected under the Family Medical Leave Act, FMLA, but you don't get any wages beyond any sick/vacation time you may have aquired.
