The Peninsula has the most panache and is kind of nouveau, but if you want a very historic and posh hotel, go for the Drake. This is where dignitaries and members of the royal family have stayed throughout the history of Chicago.

The Peninsula's not that old and it may have had a few impressive visitors but I doubt the Queen of England or Princess Di ever stayed there, as was true with the Drake.

Any of the hotels along Michigan Avenue are nice (and be pricey too)....where does your dad need to be?

I would have to say that the hotels in the Gold Coast area (north of the downtown area) are among the ritziest. You can check some of them out by going to www.hotels.com and selecting Chicago....you can further select by landmark and get hotels in that area...Gold Coast is included there. There is also the Hyatt family of hotels (Hilton and Towers, Palmer House, etc) which are in the heart of the Loop.

One of the newest on the Chicago Loop landscape is the Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago....it sits right on Michigan Avenue just south of the Magnificent Mile right near the heart of the Chicago Loop and Grant Park. (http://www.hardrockhotels.com)

Either The Drake, or The Palmer House. The Conrad Hilton is nice too. Oh I almost forgot, The W, by Navy Pier is very modern and upscale. Would probably be great for the younger visitor.

APART FROM THE PENINSULA , THERE IS THE DRAKE, THE FOUR SEASONS , HILTON TOWERS , THE RITZ CARLTON , THE PALMER HOUSE , THE HYATT , THE HOLIDAY INN AND THE W BECAUSE OF IT'S LOCATION .

4 seasons downtown is a good guess for one of them to be the most $$$.
