Because they've been through almost every experience in life that younger people face, and you can avoid falling into the same mistakes & traps that got them.
It's like driving down a road in the dark, much easier if someone who's already traveled it can let you know there's a huge sinkhole 20 feet ahead and on the left...

because they've already been through everything. it may be in a different time period but as long as they're not senile & crazy listening to old people talk is kinda fun
