I am currently building my computer, STILL, and recently I called ECS asking how to get it to work. It will actually turn on now, but I will have to create a short and use the switch in the back to turn it on and off instead of the power button. Anyway, the new problem is that I think one thing the tech rep had me do erased the BIOS from the mobo. Does anyone know how to get it back on?
Mobo: ECS nForce 570 SLIT-A v3.1
I saw something on the ECS website about downloading and booting from a floppy, but the one I built and the one I'm typing on do not have floppy drives. Would it work with a CD?
Also, the computer won't function with the power supply fan plugged in, I think the plug shorts it out. How long could it run without a power supply fan and how could I fix this?

While flashing BIOS if for ANY reason the install fails
and the existing bios is damaged or erased the
board is done and not repairable.
Unless you are EXPERIENCED in building and programing
PCs that is the one thing you should not do !!!!!

Sounds like you wired it wrong to have to jump the
board to get it to turn on.

For a last ditch effort look in your manual how to set /clear
bios defaults/cmos.Youdo that with a jumper across two pins
after pulling the battery.
Also wire your switch properly if it's not to late.

You cannot flash bios with a cd

Are you sure he had you erase the BIOS or did he just have you clear the CMOS with a jumper or switch on the mainboard. If you had erased the BIOS the computer would no longer boot. Does the computer beep once when it turns on, if so, you probably just cleared the CMOS.

At any rate updating the BIOS is generally done via a utility that is copied to a bootable floppy disk, then the program loads an updated BIOS file from another disk overwriting the old one. Since you don't have a floppy drive you could attempt the bootable CD or you could use a thumb drive that can be made bootable with this utility from HP

Most computers made within the last few years can boot to a thumb drive.

Just be very careful and very deliberate with this process, one wrong move and you'll have to send the mainboard back to get the BIOS restored.

As far as the power supply fan goes, I imagine you are referring to a different fan and not the one inside the small metal box inside your computer case. Power supplies aren't meant to be opened and worked on by just anyone, they contain hazardous voltages that could kill you. I think you are talking about a different fan anyways. If its the fan on the processor than you won't last long without that one, the processor needs that air moving to keep it cool. If its a fan thats mounted to the case you'll be okay without that one for a while, but you really should get one that actually works though.

By the sound of it there might be something seriously wrong with your mainboard though. I mean generally a BIOS upgrade or clearing won't fix a power button issue like that. And then you say a fan is shorting it out and preventing it from booting, it could be worse than just a BIOS thats messed up.

No you have to buy a floppy disk drive its about £10 or less so it is cheap and ALL motherboards have the floppy connector and you might want to get a new power supply unit. No computer when the BIOS is in a state like that can read from anything other than floppy!

to put it in words you can understand ---- you blow it.. if you did delete the bios, cause with out that infomation the system will not boot up even if you did have a floppy drive... the bios sets up the hardware of your computer.

so I would need to know what happens when you boot up the computer without that knowledge I could not help you
