The purpose of prenatal vitamins is to ensure you are getting the proper quantities of the vitamins necessary for a pregnancy.
Prenatal vitamins and regular multivitamins contain relatively the same stuff. The main difference is the quantities.
It is safe to take prenatal vitamins regardless of whether or not you are on birth control.

Its ok to take prenatal vitamins whether or not you're on birth control. They don't interact with each other and it's always a good idea to get your daily requirement of vitamins and minerals especially in your childbearing years. They may not make your hair grow longer, but they'll help make it stronger and shinier.

I have been taking prenatals since I was in high school and I was on Birth Control till I was 22. Its just like taking a multi vitamin. And in case you do have a slip up and do get pregnate on birth control its good to have the folic acid in your body for the baby ahead of time. *** I am not a doctor or a nurse to be diagnosed please call you Dr or go to you local ER. I am mearly giving advice off my own experiences or knowledge.***

I take prenatal vitamins as well as take birth control pills for other medical problems. I checked with my dr and she said it was ok for me to do. I would recommend checking with your dr to see what they say.

I've been taking prenatal vitamins to help my hair (and as it turned out my skin and nails too) for 7 years now.

I buy mine at Wal-Mart but you can find them at Target too and other stores like The Vitamin Shoppe.
