I grew up saying pop in Minnesota (80's-90's), as most Minnesotans did. The term soda became more common as I became older. I'm in San Francisco now, and I am more likely to use the term soda, 'less I want to face the scorn of the Californians.

I usually call carbonated beverages by their given name (Coke, Dr. Pepper, A&W Root Beer etc.) When I use the work pop, I am usually referring to music. When I use the word soda, I am usually referring to baking soda. If I were to speak of carbonated beverages generically, I might use both words, but in the opposite order, "sodapop!" or I would usually be more likely just to ask for coffee!
