I have a trolley jack for home use which is fine... but I know almost nothing about scissor jacks or bottle jacks for keeping in the car when away from home.

Thanks.

The nature of a hydraulic jack gives mechanical advantage many times that of a scissor jack that is generally designed for cheapness of production and low weight.
Unfortunately,a bottle jack that could fit under a car with a puncture is often so small that it would struggle to extend enough to replace the inflated tyre,at least not with any stability.
Unless youre expecting punctures/damage over and above normal road use, stick with the lightweight tyre changing jack as is original to the car.

Scissor jack may be more stable, but, a bottle jack support more weight, depending on the rated tons. I use a floor/trolley jack when at home and scissor jack for on the road. I do keep a small 1 1/2 ton bottle jack if I need additional support. Most times I use bottle jacks to help my friends level a Mobile Home or House. This 20 ton jacks.

Of the two, I would prefer the bottle jack. Scissor jacks have the infamous nickname of "suicide jacks". The reason they are called this is becuase they tend to buckle without warning. If you are under the car.... thus, "suicide jack". They are made of cheap stamped steel and are highly unstable. They are ok for changing a flat tire on the side of the road where the car will only be jacked up for a few minutes.

Bottle jacks, ones that aren't worn out and leaking fluid are not the safest type of jack, but head and shoulders over a scissor jack.

If you are going to get under the weight of what you are jacking up, I would see no problem with the bottle jack, but invest in a pair of jack stands. They are not that expensive... and a hell of alot cheaper than a tombstone.

The bottle jack is a bit more rugged and will take quite a lot of abuse without collapsing. Note that most jacks supplied with the car have a dedicated fitting at the top that links with a matching point on the car. A bottle jack won't have this so care is needed to ensure it lifts the car without damage. Also note that Hydraulic jacks can leak and lower the car unexpectedly, so take care you aren't underneath

Bottle jack better than scissor jack. If you decide to carry one make sure you store it upright so the fluid doesn't leak out.

They each have their advantages. The scissor jack will typically go lower to pick up your car. Bottle jacks can handle more weight. Scissor works on the screw principle, bottle jacks are hydraulic.
