I want to get a microscope, to see protist in pondwater and etc. So would magnifications of 100x, 400x and 900x be good for seeing protist and other cellular organisms in the water? If not what is the proper magnification I need to see them?

Yes, 400x should be more than enough to see protists in detail (at 100x, you can still spot them). Be aware that as magnification increases, resolution decreases.
Also, dust particles will look like huge mutant things under the microscope. With practice, you should be able to tell them apart.

The set of objective lens with 100x, 400x and 900x is more than enough. In fact, in my opinion, 900x may be a bit overkill.

You should be able to see enough details with 400x.

I agree that you will be better off with a standard 100x and 400x scope.
