When people aren't accepted into cliques because of how they act or just think that all the groups around them are stupid and don't want to be accepted into them, they form their own groups with like-minded people. Humans are social creatures, and its much easier to be different than the norm but still have a few people to stand beside you than it is to go at it all alone. No matter where you go, people will always stereotype you and you will always stereotype people, just because that is what a lot of your previous experience has been when you deal with people who look or seem to act a certain way.

they don't label themselves!! Just because they act or dress a certain way doesn't mean they are labeling themselves! You guys label them, maybe not to their face sometimes, but non the less u do! So I don't think it's fair not to hear their side of the story don't u? Oh, that's right, u don't because u have already made up ur mind and aren't gonna change it no matter what people say! Get over it and grow up!

I think south park put it best.

GOTH 1: Who needs that kind of Barbie love, anyway? Everyone's just walking around like a bunch of conforminsts. Go ahead and wear your business suits so you can make thirty-four thousand dollars a year to buy your condominium. They're all zombies racing to their graves. Love didn't work for my mom and dad. Why should it work for me?

GOTH2: They're all a bunch of Nazi conformists cheerleaders.

Stan: But if life is only pain, then... what's the point of living?

GOTH 1: Just to make life more miserable for the conformists.

Stan: All right, so how do I join you?

GOTH 2: If you wanna be one of the non-conformists, all you have to do is dress just like us and listen to the same music we do.

everyone wants to belong and be a part of a group. that's why they label themselves. yet everyone wants to be unique. we all want to be recognized for our uniqueness, but we don't want that uniqueness to make us appear to be weird, nerdy, etc. therefore, most younger people will associate themselves with a particular group in order to avoid a nerdy-type label. yet, at the same time, they will also maintain that they have wonderfully unique characteristics that make them stand out in that group.

Young people searching for a place to fit in but not be conformists. We as a people have this desire to belong to something greater but at the same time be something different than our surroundings.

People try to be "different" and "unique" because they're insecure and need to find value in themselves. The problem is, they are looking for it in the wrong place.

Because insecure people need labels to define and justify the things they do, say, wear, listen to etc.

When someone asks me if I am goth...I say, No..I'm Alice.

They can't think as far ahead of themselves as you can, so they don't even understand that they're being hypocrites.
