If your computer's CPU had to constantly access the hard drive to retrieve every piece of data it needs, it would operate very slowly. When the information is kept in memory, the CPU can access it much more quickly.

Theres lots of types, ROM(read only memory, which is sort of like permanent)..RAM(Random access memory, which is like temporary memory, this is one of the main things that makes your computer faster or slower)

Theres two types, RAM and hard disk. The hard disk permanetly stores items. RAM only stores data provided the power is on.
