according to how their deadlines are set, the time spent on interviewing random people and shoot the whole thing on tape?

You may have to be more specific about this. TV, radio, or print?

In general, it depends on the assignment. For the most part, reporters are working for that day. In television, the deadline is determined by when the report will air. Noon? 5 p.m.? And so on. Newspapers, at least for news folks, usually have stories in by late afternoon. Sometimes it can be later for breaking events, usually sports but not always. (And let's not get into the entire Internet side of it; we're still working out the particulars there.)

Some of the other time making calls, taking calls, etc. There isn't much "random interviewing" done.
