It is the day when the sun passes over most closely to your location. If you are lucky enough to live in a Hawaii this happens twice per year. There summer is twelve months long with two longest days but still just one shortest day.

the first day of summer. june 21st. then the days start to get shorter until the first day of winter and then they start getting longer. I love longer days with sunshine.
