Ok well like lots of kids in the summer, I want to make some money. But I am not old enough to get a part job somewhere. My Catholic School does a Summer Tutoring Program. It is available to any boys and girls of any school (1st to 8th grade) and goes every Monday to Friday for about 8 hours a day from June 25 to August 3 (our summer vacation is from June 24 to August 6). That means I will be at school tutoring 27 of my 42 days of summer break (we get July 3-5 off). That's about 216 hours of my summer. I get paid $6 an hour (I know it's below minimum). After doing the math, I can make $1,296 in this short summer. Since you have to meet certain criteria to be eligible to tutor, all my closest friends will not be doing this. Not a lot of people I know or hang out with will be doing this. But another major downside to this is we will have to wear our school uniforms to the tutoring sessions. So that means over half the summer, I will have to wear my school uniform. The

students recieving the tutoring do not have to wear uniforms. And the teachers can wear anything they want (within reason). Personally, I think this is unfair. I was planning on just going over to one my friends' houses after tutoring to hang out and relax after a long day, but I don't know if I really want to go if I will be the only one there in my school uniform (in the summer!!!). So, can they do this? Is it fair? Is it worth it? What should I do?

Does it really matter what you wear?
Uniforms don't really matter and your friends won't care.
They've seen you in those clothes a million times before

And anyways, working anywhere else would mean wearing a certain uniform.
So you'd be stuck in one either way.

Yes it is worth it. You will be helping students that really need your help. If you can help one student GET what he or she didn't get before you explained then that make you very special, this is something you can be proud of yourself for, as for wearing the uniform, I think for the teachers and students eye it distinguishes you from them. The students recognize you as a tutor as do the teachers. $6.00 per hour is not below minimum wage, it's about .25 cents above. I hope you don't let the uniform stand in the way of you helping a fellow student. You are young and there will be more summers. Thank you for being so special.

Since the school is paying you, you are considered an "employee" or representative of that organization (school). In that case it is perfectly fair for them to require you to stay in a particular dress code. Not many part-time jobs (restaurant, retail, etc.) exist that do not require some type of uniform. Welcome to the work world.

If you do not like the conditions under which you will be tutoring, then don't tutor. However, if you do not tutor, you will have to find another way to make money.

Do what you will, keeping in mind that beggers cannot be choosers.

money is always good, and you could use your earnings to buy new and cute clothes. spending time in your uniform wont kill you, and if you are that worried about it pack some different clothes into a small drawstring bag and then change before you leave to your friends.
