The first thing you need to understand is taxes are a "SCAM".

1. It's to pay for free local schools Which surveys have shown don't educate the kids any better than home schooling.

2. Pay for roads? No they don't! A tax is extracted on each and every gallon of motor fuel sold in the USA this tax is supposed to pay for roads.

3. Pay for local police & fire departments!
Depending on where you live, volunteer fire depts. served well in the old days.
As far as police, where I live {in the country} every home owner owns a gun and people in surrounding areas know it and mostly leave us alone.
I attended a political meeting recently and one of the elected politicians stated quote,"I'm afraid to come to your area out there." It made me feel good.

Politicians main concern is spending other peoples money........Personally I can live peace-fully without any political help at all.

It does make you wonder doesn't it? If you have to pay the taxes or lose the property - did you ever really own it?

Property taxes go to pay for all city and county services that are deemed for the public good. People who don't own property often like to vote to raise these taxes so that they have more services that they are not paying for. In some countries, the only voters who can vote to raise or not raise property taxes to pay for services are the people who own the property.

Personally, I find all taxes offensive. If we must have taxes I say a 15% income tax across the board for everyone. No loopholes, no deductions, no special classes of taxes. Just 15% for everyone. At the very least - more money will be collected and everyone's dollar will have the same buying power, 85 cents. This is the one thing our country to do that really would help the poor - but we have the best house and senate that lobbying money can buy, so it will never happen.

Property taxes have nothing to do with "America" per se. Those are a locally assessed tax. There is no federal law that requires or assess property taxes. Those are assessed because the civilized citizens of your town thought that roads, police, fire, and schools (ALL funded by property taxes) would be a great idea. If you prefer to live in the stone age or on a deserted island...go knock yourself out. However, just do not use any facility, infrastructure, or service paid for by these taxes to do it.

Property taxes are used for upkeep of public facilities and roads. Since everyone in a town has the ability to use all of the roads and other facilities (library, parks, stuff like that) it's only fair that everyone helps pay for their upkeep.

It's the law. Break a law and find out what happens. Governments and school districts need money to operate. They have to get it from somewhere.

in most places, it pays for schools, municipal services, municipal streets, hospitals, etc. (it's built into the rent, too, by landlords who own the property and have to pay it)

It pays for things that all people use, such as roads, schools, libraries, police and fire protection.
