Caffeine is in a lot of the products that we consume on a daily basis, but what is caffeine in its original, unaltered state? Where does it come from and how is it put into use by the manufacturers who put it into their products?

It is compound found in a number of plants. Coffee being the most obvious, but also tea and guarana. Caffeine used in other products is usually extracted from coffee since there is a large market for de-caffeinated coffee.
