I guess it will depend on the type work you do.
If, you have a degree in a high paying field, you may need to look at areas where the pay is high for your field of experience. Many times the cost of living will be more for these areas. This be places like California, New York etc.
If, you not have a degree and work like the majority of Americans, waitress, check out clerk etc. Then you want to consider States that are not as Economically developed, as the cost of living will be lower. Some of these areas may be Mississippi, Arkansas, the Dakotas etc.
In California you may rent a house for $800 a month in a nice area. In Arkansas you may rent a nice house for $400 a month.
These are the things you need to think about. If, you making $3000 a month, then California may be a nice choice, but, if you make $1000 a month you may want to consider Arkansas.
IF, your on a fixed income, I would suggest a low cost of living State.
