I use 'disk keeper' lite to defrag my computer but it is now running really slowly, taking about 4 hours to check a 30gb drive.

Would shutting down some programmes help?

quit all programs, press control alt delete, and click on the processes tab to find all that are running. close all that are tied to your xp user account, ecxept for explorer.exe

then run defrag.

why are you defraging? that was useful for older slower 54000 rpm drives, but the modern 72000 rpm s don't really need it. you more than likely have a 72000 rpm.

I bet you'll find a lot of programs running in the ctrl alt del window(more than 5) thats where your problem is.
click. start, run, type
msconfig
click on the startup tab and start removing some checks. this will make it so when you reboot your comp you'll start with less programs running and things will run smoother.

quit wasting your time defraging. I haven't defraged once in about 10 years. and I download and delete ALOT of stuff!!!!!

shutting down SOME programs? It is recommended to not run ANY program while you defrag. Simply start the defrag and go do something away from your computer. Also, the person above me says to NOT defrag which I totally disagree with. Especially when you mention a 30 gb drive which is most likely an older drive. But he is right about cont, alt, del to stop running programs.

Also..

yes shutting down other programs does help. Because if the programs write to the drive it then has to defrag that bit again..

The more often you defrag, the less there is fragmented and it should, theoretically defrag much faster.

now that may be because your hard drive is getting full.... check how much space you have left on your hard drive..... 30 gig is not that big of a hard drive these days.. windows xp takes upto 2 gig of space,
