Well...

Both have their origin in Japan.
Manga [1] is - to a certain extent - equavalent to the Western "comic book" [2] format, while anime [3] is equavalent to the Western "animatied cartoon" [4] format.

As with their Western counterparts, a story can start out as either manga or anime, then be "translated" to the other medium: the popular anime "Ghost in the Shell" [5] is a good example of manga-to-anime (which is by far the most common direction) and ".hack" [6] is a fair example of the reverse, though it was also a videogame.

In making a comparison between the Western and Eastern, I must point out that the market (and therefore social standing) of "manga" and "anime" vs. "cartoons" and "comic books" is vastly different: in Japan, they are more often - though not always - marketed and purchased by a more adult population, whereas is the West - with some exceptions ("Maus" [7] and the Sandman series [8] being good examples) - the market for these types of publications are mostly 8-16 year old childern. This is not to say that more "adult-oriented" animations and comic books do not exist in the West (see "Fritz the Cat" [9] for examples of both), just that they are the exception, not the rule, whereas in Japan, such "adult-oriented" materials are much more common and accessable. Also, the themes of manga and anime are often much more adult, in both style and execution, than those of comparable Western publications.

Hope this helps...

Manga is the raw material of what the anime is supposed to be. It is like a comic in a magazine and is usually more explicit than the anime.
also the manga doesn't contain filler episodes (the animes usually do) which stray from the plot so that it gives the maga writter more time to add onto the series.

The anime is usually two manga chapters put into one episode. Like i said they normally contain fillers. As well they usually draw out conversation and battles a little more. There is far less swearing, the clothing of charactes may be altered for a mroe general audience as well.

and most basically of all manga is like a comic strip, and anime is animated :D

Manga are comics and often in black and white form.
Anime is the animated form of the manga.
Most of the cases the anime is based off the manga (DBZ, One Piece, etc) and follow it with some minor changes.
Some special cases like pokemon it starts off as an anime and then a manga is produced.

Anime is the lively form; like, on a television. maximum anime are tailored from manga, novels, or video games, yet some are unique. they have an inclination to have plenty greater filler than their manga opposite numbers, and a discounted quantity of ecchi (no longer consistently, in basic terms lots of the time). Manga is nearly a comedian, and is study good-to-left. Chapters of manga are released weekly/month-to-month in manga magazines. while a definite extensive style have been released this way, they're accrued up and offered in shops as a quantity, this is basically a decision of chapters (in many situations like 4-10).
