I should add that the public schools are fine and the roads are in good condition. Crime is also very low - especially compared to areas with higher density populations.

Socials services are the minimum they need to be to ensure the health and welfare of the state's residents. All of the nice-to-have services found in states like CA, NY, and MA are absent here.

Good jobs are in sufficient supply to land this state in the top 10 on the per-capita income list.

Already I see that I've confused people by even suggesting that a state with no sales tax and/or no income tax even exists.

Well, sports fans, the state is New Hampshire. And there are other states that also have no income tax or no sales tax. I think Alaska has neither tax as well but I'm too lazy to go look it up right now. ;-)

Now that you know such a thing is possible you might wish to inquire of your elected betters just why your taxes are so high.

P.S. It's my understanding that both North Carolina and Georgia are seriously considering dropping their income taxes to make their states more attractive as a place to live (read: they intend it to attract the sort of folks who want to work hard and not have to pay a noticeable portion of their earnings to the state).

Oregon also fits this description. Although, they also pay higher property taxes.

I live in California, however. My taxes go to many services and public works and infrastructure, services, and maintenance of our wonderful public spaces and environment. It keeps me content.

What I'm most upset about is my tax money going to subsidize OTHER states, most of them "red" states at that. For every dollar that goes to the fed from CA taxes, less than 80 cents comes back here. I just hope all you other states with low tax rates know that you are really subsidized by innovative and booming states like mine, which by golly, tax their citizens a lot more.

Most red states would be VERY different places if it weren't for the subsidizing of them by wealthier blue states.

They are correct. People that have very little income, spend almost all of it and people that have a lot, are able to save/invest their money. You don't pay sales tax on money you save or invest. And, for the record, NJ has both a sales tax and an income tax and outrageous property taxes to boot. But, the state is not broke. Plus NJ has the highest income average of all states. And lastly, the success of a state has nothing to do with it's income taxes and sales taxes. Texas has oil and is the main reason that there's no income tax. Alaska is the same way.

My state has no sales or income tax either. New Hampshire has never had one, though that doesn't mean we don't have some taxes ( we have a Rooms and Meals Tax aimed at tourists), and our property taxes (over 1/2 goes to schools) are through the roof! It can also cost you a $1,000 to register a vehicle!

A VAT (value added tax) is different from a sales tax.

Sales taxes are calculated at the point of sale, added to the price of an item, and printed on the sales slip of receipt.

A VAT can be any one of a number of taxes that are applied to a product before the point of sale, and the retail price can include several VATs that accumulate in the chain from the production of raw materials, through the manufacturing process, and along the wholesale path. These taxes are hidden from the consumer.

Don't confuse sales taxes with VATs.

What state are you in? My state has income tax + sales tax + an extra 1% income tax to pay for schools + property tax.
