A person can sometimes retain what they've read by reading aloud. To sharpen one's memory, try doing crossword puzzles, word jumble games, trivia games, etc. A good way to retain what you've read, is to write things down on paper. ex: I have made up a grocery list on paper, only to accidently leave the list at home, but by writing it all down ahead of time, I do well to shop & get what I wrote on my list.
