I think David Chase wanted to make sure nobody idolized Tony or even liked Tony when it was all said and done.
Even James Gandolfini said he liked the character Tony until the boat incident with Paulie and he killed Christopher.
I think Tony will be left alive but not really.Everything HE values will be gone. He will be a shell of his former self. To kill him would be to glorify him, allow him to live in infamy.
I don't think that's what David Chase is shooting for.
Now how he goes about destroying Tony from the inside out will be the real story. Because this show has always been about Tony's mental state in one way or another.
