you got it! they are called "popups" and somes are called "popdowns". These were installed by adwares/spywares. There are many many anti-spyware programs out there can help you to get rid of them. Head to my site (www.komando.com), I have post a list of good and free programs in Downloads, under Security section, besides that, you can get them at www.filehippo.com. Look for Ad-aware, Spybots Search and Destroy, and Windows Defender, these 3 are the best.

You can install them all in yoru computer, but never, never can have more than one antivirus program in a PC at any given time, they are tend to conflict with each other, but not the case for anti-spywares. Make sure, right after you downloaded and installed them, update them first, and scan them. Do one at a time, and repeate like at least once a week or every 2 weeks.

Goodluck,
Kim :)

ActiveX controls can be there, dormant, from a past session with Microsoft. Yes, every time you turn on your computer, and it boots up, a script runs that sends all your personal data and private files, plus all email addresses, and all sites visited, off to the 'mothership' at MS.

Simply not using IE, and running Firefox instead, won't stop that activity. The only solution to be safe on your own computer is to run http://www.mepis.org or http://pclinuxos.com or one of the 315 distros at http://livecdlist.com

You might ask why "all" the above? Well, Linux is all free of the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Malware Definitions" and exempt from the 'trusted Partner " cartel protection racket!

More, Linux runs 75% of the Internet! It is what runs 165 governments and the Fortune 500 corporations.

XP is actually more than 6 years old! and contains the same "114,000 Microsoft Virus Malware Definitions" included in Vista! (They are also how MS get control of your system!)

But, you might have heard how bloated Vista is, that it takes almost 20GB of drive storage, versus Linux on 50MB of space, with another 1 to 2 GB for thousands of games, programs and applications.

What is in that huge Vista BLOB? Bad things to take over your computer, that's what!

Spyware, trojans, spam all can do this. You need to go online and download more free trial software, www.activevirusshield.com, is a good place, and scan again. It could also be the website you are going to doing it. Are the pages all xxx stuff and ads, then you are being spammed. The person gets paid 1/2 of 1 cent for each webpage you click on, if they open it for you, they still get paid.

Unfortunately it sounds as though you have a trojan which is capable of disguising itself as something harmless. Download AVG Antivirus free and update.
Restart PC in safe mode (Press F8) if you are running XP.
Run AVG in safe mode.

Option 2
Uninstall IE7 from add/remove windows software(make sure you have an alternative browser such as firefox),reboot and download and install IE7 from Microsoft.com.

If this works then keep the AVG its the best antivirus software by miles. Download Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft adaware both available at Download.com and Free. Remember to carry out regular scans. I usually give my PC a good overhaul once a week just to keep the NASTIES away. Hope this helps.

Is your popup blocker on? Typically if you have things just popping up for no reason, it is spyware. I would try another spyware program such as windows defender, it's good to have 2-3 spyware programs installed on the computer.

get a malware program (Windows Defender actually works OK and it's free). Try running that. Make sure that you enable pop-up blockers in your browser, too. Or, it could be you have a stcky "enter" button!

Try using Ad-Aware. It's free at download.com. If that doesn't work, try adjusting your pop-ups. Sometimes, the simplest solution is the right one.
