Street bikes

I presume you mean something sporty by "street bikes," no cruisers. My rule of thumb with sport bikes is to stay at 50 hp or less, which would mean 500 cc's or less with most models out there. A 50 hp bike will accelerate harder than most cars, but isn't too likely to get you in over your head in an emergency.

There's four really good 500 cc and under sport bikes on the US market: The Kawasaki Ninja 250 and 500, the Suzuki GS500, and the Buell Blast. Any one of these can make a good starter bike, so see which one feels comfortable for you. I ride a GS500F myself, but there's no wrong answer wtih these as long as you get one in good shape.

Harley Davidson FXD Lowrider. Most guys that buy little piglets(Sporties a.k.a.Sportster)wind up wanting a bigger bike 2 weeks later. The FXD has a 1340cc, with a 5 speed tranny. Maintenance is pretty easy and with a CV(constant velocity)carb the performance is great. The next step up from that would be a Fat Boy or a full dresser type bike. Make sure you get a comfortable seat. I spent $450 for a Corbin Gunslinger but I like the $75.00 seat I bought at a local shop better on long rides(anything over 150 miles). Whatever you get, be sure to do the maintenance regularly and keep the rubber side down.

Here is a good overview:
http://www.oldguy.us/easy-riding/bg-models-standards.php
At the bottom of that web page are links to more lists of beginner bikes.
If you are the kind of man who is into tattoos, has lots of hair everywhere, and likes to hang out at the starbucks in assless leather chaps and sleeveless shirts with similarly outfitted guys talking on their cell phones, get a harley davidson, otherwise get anything else.
For a 250 you could also consider the Suzuki GZ250. I'm looking for a motorcycle myself, but I think it will be more than 250 cc because I'm afraid I will outgrow a 250 fast. I'm thinking of the 500-750 cc range.

I'd suggest something 750 cc or less. And no sport bikes. Sport bikes are not starter bikes. Get a bike that you fit comfortably. Make sure you can easily put both feet on the ground and can sit comfortably with your hands and feet on the controls. Don't worry too much about style for your first bike, you'll probably upgrade in a year or two anyway.

Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD. Yamaha V-Star Custom (650), Honda Shadow VLX, Suzuki Boulevard S40. These are cruisers, they are comfortable, with an upright riding position. They have enough power to get you out of a jam, and are relatively light and very maneuverable. All are around $5k (US) brand new. Don't go sport bike right out of the chute - lots of people have died that way. Nothing wrong with them, just not for inexperienced riders.

Dpending on what you guys in the states are allowed to ride first up. In Australia we are limited to 250cc four stroke four cyl or 600cc singles which is what I would go for.
Buy a motart type machine. If you after the sports type of riding I would suggest going this way as you can ride one of these a lot better and have more off corner power on tap than a japanese 250cc four.
They are crap anyway, no suspension and aren't good if you weigh over 75kgs or 165pds.

Good luck mate and enjoy.
Make sure you do a rider cse to gain some valuable roadcraft as it will save your life!

Get a Kawasaki Ninja 250. It gets excellent fuel economy and will easily cruise at 75 mph on the highway with a top speed of 87 mph. You can get a brand new one for just over 3 thousand dollars out the door.

I have been looking at the Honda Rebel 250, Yamaha Virago 250, and the Hysong GV 250. The Rebel is used in most MSF courses and has been around for around 20 years. It is the same age for the Virago. The GV 250 has the most feactures for the price, but is not well known in the states. I have seen them up close and they are well made. That is the one I plan on getting latter this year.
