Insurance company stocks, is book value commonly used to value?

I know its used alot with bank stocks, just wondering???

Book value is a good measure if the assets are marked to market. But not very good for companies with fixed assets on the books at historical cost.

Market value is the commonly used value for all stocks which are publicly traded. Book value is a starting point for selling stocks.
