height of the tree ........ height of the tower

shadow of the tree ...... shadow of the tower

12/8 = x/30

8x = 360

x = 45ft

Answer: 45 ft

Solution: Use Ratios.
The ratio between the hight of the object and the shadow cast will be the same, i.e. if the height of the tower is H feet,
H : 30 = 12 : 8;
H/30 = 12/8 = 1.5;
H = 30 * 1.5 = 45
Height = H feet = 45 feet

Using the law of ratio and proportion: the product of the means equals the product of the extremes.
12:8 = x:30, the extremes are 12 & 30; the means are 8 & x.
12 * 30 = 8 * x
360 = 8x
360 / 8 = x
x = 45 feet, this must be the height of the radio tower

We must assume the tree and tower are in close proximity, else the problem cannot be solved without further info.

12/8 = T/30 , where T = height of tower
T= 360/8 = 45 feet

Set up a proportion:
12 is to 8 as x is to 30 or 12/8 = x/30
Cross multiply so 12*30 = 8x or
x = 12*30/8 = 45

this is a ratio problem , its how two things relate according to the ratio of rise over run. the rise is the height of the tree or tower. the run is the length of the shadow. since they are equal ratios, make a fraction of the two ratios, rise over run

tree (12 ft) / (8 ft) should equal tower (x) / (30 ft)

(12 ft)/(8 ft) = (x ft) / (30ft)
to get the x by itself you have to move the (30 ft) to the other side of the equal sign to do that use the opposite function of division (multiplication). so multiply both sides by (30 ft/1ft).
(30ft/1ft)x (12ft/8ft) = (30ft/1ft)x(xft/30ft)
you can now have (30 x12)/(1x8) = (30x)/ (1x30)
simplify farther,
360/8 = x
once more, 45 = x so the tower is actually 45 ft tall.

ht of tree shadow / ht of tree = ht of tower shadow / ht of tower

8 / 12 = 30 / x
8x = 360
x = 45'
