Undoubtedly through adversity you gain strength. The miserable people who answered this are a perfect example of the 'Why me' attitude, I'm more of a 'why not me' person, when I see people who are in constant pain, I feel humbled and grateful for my lot. You can chose to be a victim of circumstance and fold or...A survivor, when you've experienced bad things and are still here to tell the story. I'm so glad I'm a survivor. In fact what doesn't kill you makes you stronger is my motto. Peace to you sweet gent

Unless you plan on moving to Wisconsin and staying there whether you're with her or not, you should be doing what she's doing. You've become attached to someone that you probably can't be with, this is exactly what she's trying to avoid, and it sounds like she's on the breaking point. So like I said above if your going to be far away, then tell her that she's right about becoming too attached and that you've already become attached to her. If you think you can talk to her as just a friend then tell her you'll do so from now on, but if not tell her you still want to be friends, but you need to stay away for a bit until you've gotten over her (if it's going to take to long then it probably would be best to never talk to her at all). EDIT: You could also try starting off just instant messaging or texting. When you do it that way, she can't hear the emotions of your voice.

It can make you stronger, but also it can break you down sometimes you can get beaten down so low, that it takes everything to get back up. Also you need to be very careful that things dont take you over to the point of making you become what you hate. Stronger can make you, bitter and icy and hard to approach. It does not kill you but it can kill some of your qualities.

Have you ever seen it any other way? In a direct confrontation where the saying has meaning and you survive the situation have you not grown for the experience?
