it was for a police special bike. they certified the speedo. pretty self-explanatory, really, but i understand why you would ask the question. surely, it can't be that simple, right?

Harley Davidson Police Special

Actually every Harley-Davidson speedometer is made the same way, so every one of them is marked that way for cheaper manufacturing. The non-police speedometers are calibrated within 5-7% accuracy and police are 3-5%. I think these numbers are correct. Just because you have a speedo marked that way, does not mean it came off of a police model. What year and model do you have? Is is stock? Is the speedo the one that came on your bike? By the way, the pink wire is the speedo wire.

All H-D Speedos are tested and marked as such, the ones for the police models are adjusted to a closer tolerance. The ones installed on the police version are marked as such. They are only available to police departments when new, and must have a certain amout of milage on them before being resold to the public. In short, yes that is what you have.

The police special edition that peace officers can buy are not the same.

I believe it is originally from a Police model. Dept. issue, not a Peace Officer Edition. Robin R. is wrong, because they are not all marked that way. They are marked "Certified". And Jason J. is incorrect as well. If you want a new (anyone can buy used) Firefighter Edition, or Peace Officer Edition you DO have to be able to prove you qualify, just like a Shrine bike.

they are and were never made differently. wow they were used on police bikes like the earlyl fxdp. they are calibrated just like the one on the show room floor. you dont have to be a cop or fireman to buy a police bike, although you do have to be one to buy a shrine bike. that is what they are called and they are special edition harleys and are red or white or blue or black. but your speedo came off of an fxdp dyna police bike, you can buy the police bikes after they trade them in for new ones yearly or when ever they trade them in.

At one time it was calibrated for a particular police special motorcycle.

Never had a Harley myself, but my Kawasaki police special came with a certification for the speedometer calibration.

Could be, the official police models did have that on the speedo but there were unofficial after market ones also. I'd like to find a particular one made in 1983. If you are interested in selling it, send me a pic...
