I live in San Fran. How far south do I have to go to find warm water to swim in?

I have 2 kids, 8 and 9, and we want to go to the beach next weekend, but we want to know how far south to go.

Santa Cruz Beach. The area around the boardwalk is warm enough to swim in. It's crowded too. And the boardwalk rides/games are always a big hit with the kids (and a lot of fun for adults too).

It's about 70 miles south of the city. The drive down 101 and 17 usually takes 1 1/2 hours.

Probably San Luis Obispo area. Although if you don't mind a lake instead of the ocean, try Lake Berryessa up near Napa.

Most of the Pacific Ocean of the coast of northern california is only in the 50s at its warmest, though surfers will go with wet suit anytime. There is a warm spot in Morro Bay just north of SLO and Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara can be quite nice.

Depends on what you can handle. I used to swim in Santa Cruz, but I was hardier then.

Lover's Point Beach in Pacific Grove is relatively warm.

Or you could go north and do river beaches.

I guess it depends on what you mean by warm, but I'd say it must be CABO. I live in Newport Beach and even here people wear wet suits here to surf!

i know how you feel, ocean beach is too cold. but anyway, i went surfing to santa cruz earlier and the water was warm.
