I need a size 7 allen key for some maintenance... but my online toolshop place seems only to sell allen keys and torx keys.

I've already got torx keys (useful).. but need to know about hex and allen keys - thanks. :)

Yes hex and allen keys are the same, generally you wont find a 7mm one in a set this was a special size introduced in the 1980's when manufacturers started to use fasteners that the averag diy person wouldnt have at home hence trying to force the motorist to go to the local dealer, however your local motorist accessories shop should stock them

A hex key and an allen wrench are 2 different tools, but you will need both standard and metric to work on most anything these days, I have both all the way up to 60mm, and they break/strip out and have to be replaced on occasion, cheap ones are not a good investment. If it is made in China don't buy it. A good folding allen whench set will cost you at least $20 dollars and it doesn't have the larger sizes in it.

Allen and Hex are the same, six sided. Make sure you get the right size as some imperial sizes are almost a fit in metric and vice-versa. The keys are generally softer than the screw heads so the end of a key damages easily, especially if not quite the right fit. If the bolt is tight don't use a pipe end on the key, that will bend it

Just another name for the same thing- `Allen` is an english term and `hex` american I think.

A lot of allen key sets have the 7mm missing so if you buy a set make sure its there, they only usually put the most common in a set to lower the price.

Edit- soz terry did`nt read yours, should have.

I believe Americans call them hex (hexaginal) 6 sided whilst we Brits have always known them as Allen Keys.

So the answer to your question is - Yes.
