can i protect my walls by the wainscoting?

Instead of protecting, what are the problems to start with? wainscot is a "chair rail" used to protect the walls from the high back of chairs hitting the walls. If this is the problem, then "Yes" a wainscot will protect the walls but, look at the problem first, maybe move the table a little further away from the walls, move the chairs a little further away.
Wainscot is expensive if you go the "wood" route and it real easy to put in.
