The way our house is the sun ends up hitting one side of our house constantly and cause my brother's room and mine to be about ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house. But we can't have the air conditioner on all the time because it would cost too much and also the rest of the house will be freezing before our rooms get to a decent temperture. What can we do to make our rooms cooler??? And we have fans in our rooms, but that doesn't help much at all. And we can't open a window cuz outside is hotter.

it doesn't look very good, but some people put tin foil on their windows to reflect the heat away,. hang some heavy, lined drapes-it will keepmost of the heat contained to the window

Is there a air conditioner duct in your room? Is the duct in the full-open position? Opening your door will help the air handler push the cooler air into your room and draw the heated air away from your room. If you don't get much airflow from the duct, but the other parts of the house do get airflow, have the duct work checked for a loose fitting.

It sounds like you are on the south side of the house. It won't help you immediately, but talk your parents into planting deciduous trees on this side of the house. Tell dad that it will increase the value of the home, and cut down on the cost of air conditioning. If this is just a temporary living place, ask the landlord or your folks if you can hang a temporary bamboo screen or decorative lattice from the eaves of the house outside your rooms. You don't want to block air movement; you want to block the direct rays of the sun.

Can you talk the folks into a portable air conditioner just for your room? If you live in a dry climate, you can use a portable evaporative cooler in your room too.

Try closing off some of the air conditioning vents to cooler rooms that don't need it as much as your's and your brother's rooms. Also keep your curtains closed. I've even heard of people putting up something (like the sun shades used in cars) in the window to help block the sun.
