If you have a fairly small bowl with no filter the best fish for you is a betta. You could also keep a male dwarf gourami if the bowl is at least 1 gallon.

Please don't go for a goldfish, those actually get quite big and need for more space than your bowl.

Just change out the water in the bowl every 2-3 days to keep it clean and fish, keep the bowl in a warm spot but no direct sunlight and either of the above fish will do quite well. Those water changes are important though, don't let them go!

a betta is your best choice -- they don't need oxygen in the water. contrary to popular belief goldfish need a lot of oxygen -- part of why they die so fast in a bowl. you could go with a paradise fish or a dwarf gourami if your bowl is big -- at least 2 1/2 gallons. they are from the same family of fish as bettas and they breathe air at the top of the water.

Goldfish should never be housed in a fishbowl.

I think 1 gallon is too small for a gourami.

Well, I think it's too small for a betta too, but that's just me. Once you see how interesting and lively they can be in bigger spaces, you'll know why. I wouldn't put one in less than 2 gallons, and the 2 I have now are in a split 6 gallon filtered tank. They love it! AND the maintenance is a lot easier.

For a bowl, I'd actually recommend 1 or 2 African Dwaf Frogs. They are really interesting and cute.
