We recently made a home-made pond in our backyard for five goldfish. We filled it with creek water to start with then we set out buckets of tap water for a day or two to let the chlorine evaporate so that it wouldn't kill the fish. Its been a little over a week and only one died the rest are doing great and have already grown. I hope that helps! Good Luck! :)

A big bucket is just an odd shaped SMALL pond. Consider this...goldfish are cold water fish and any size "bucket" is NOT big enough to keep the water cool enough for the fish no matter where you put it outside. Mud is not a good idea in the bucause it can clog their gills. They CAN live in a bucket but trust me, they will not survive for very long. Even with outdoors fish ponds, they still require oxogenated water and that is why fish ponds have pumps.
Next, if the fish manage to live in the bucket all summer long, they will NOT live through the winter outside in shallow water.
Also, that is partly why fish ponds have the deep part.
The last thing to consider is predators!!!!! Skunks, racoons, cats and some species of birds will hunt your fish and just because you may live in teh city does not mean that you do not HAVE predators around.
Beta fish are warm water fish best suited for bowls or tanks.
Best not to put any kind of fish outside in a bucket....sorry

Ditto to mom tree, you are talking about a very, very small pond. I don't really think it would work for you long term because a very small body of water like that will get very hot if the sun hits it at all. Try to find something a bit larger for your micro pond and it would work far better.

little golfish will die outside. and betas will not do well either. About the only fish you could put outside would be koi and then you would need a pond and not a bucket.

If they don't die from a poor environment, they will probably be eaten by a raccoon, a cat, or a big bird.
Please don't try this.

I wouldn't. Those little goldfish barely stay alive inside!!!! Only koi are successful outside.
