I want it to dry hard for a plaque. Will is still dry hard or turn into mush?

Food Color will work... I've used Schilling's food color before, and had NO problems with it setting.

If you're looking for "earthy" colors... try a hobby-shop: Woodland Scenics has a great line of liquid colors for "Concrete", "Earth", "Green" etc.

It will dry fine. Keep it out of direct sunlight though otherwise the color will really fade.

you can to make play dough. try a small sample and see what happens.
