unless they have their sights on a bigger piece of the pie...that is, unless Israel realizes that she is still surrounded by 'enemies' and will likely be for decades to come?

Israel, offering Golan, awaits Syria proposals Fri Jun 8,07
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has told Syria it is willing to trade land for peace and is waiting to hear whether President Bashar al-Assad would cut ties with Iran and hostile guerrilla groups in return, Israeli officials said on Friday.
One said Syrian officials had so far indicated a willingness to conduct discreet contacts that might lead to a resumption of formal peace talks after a seven-year hiatus..Two days after Olmert confirmed Israel had sent conciliatory messages to Damascus, Israeli media widely reported a leak to a newspaper that quoted a senior diplomat saying Syria had been reminded that Israel was ready to discuss returning the Golan Heights, captured 40 years ago this week, if peace talks resume.

Syria is 50% likely to interpret this as a sign of weakness on the part of the Israelis.

Why could Israel try this? in the Seventies, new Jewish settlements have been based in the Golan Heights. as nicely to its strategic value, the Golan Heights is an area of the Jordan River watershed which supplies an substantial area of Israel's water grant. If Israel ever returns it, who can assure that Syria won't use it to attack Israel? Israel captured the Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day conflict and lower back in the 1973 Yom Kippur conflict. conflict is often like of challenge. Syria lost in the 1967 and 1973 Wars, so why could Israel return some thing she has gained for not something?

They have the technology now that having the Golan Heights will give her enemies no advantage of height, I suspect. They refused to give it up because anyone who had the Golan Heights had a tactical advantage over the surrounding lower regions when it came to missile attacks.

Technology has changed all that.
