Discovered by who? I would imagine that the many tens of thousands of residents living in what would eventually be called America would have been surprised to find out that prior to 1492 it hadn't been "discovered" yet.

It depends on whom you believe. According to historical evidence, the vikings actually landed in North America around the year 1000, but since they did not settle the land and established a foothold, they are not consider discoverers of America. The first documented expedition that claimed for an European country ownership of the New World is Columbus expedition. He landed in Watling Island in the Bahamas, which he called San Salvador, in 1492. Columbus never set foot in what is considered the U.S. today. The first explorer to land in the U.S, is John Cabot in 1497. So the official version is 1492, because it is documented.

Depends on which group of people you want to give the credit. The crusaders looking for new ways to the Orient, the vikings, the Indians, Columbus in 1492, take your pick.

If you go by modern European opinion it was when Columbus got to the "West INdies" in A.D. 1492. However, in A.D 1000, Lief Erickson, a viking, landed on North America, but no settlements were founded.
