You are liable.

NEVER 'cash' a cheque for some-one else .. if it 'bounces' (and you already paid them) YOU have to go after THEM for repayment (the Bank will not want to know).

There is a well known scam that involves asking you to cash a cheque in UK for some 'commission' and send the money off by Western Union (or other non-refundable means) to some criminal abroad.

Usually the cheque is from some Nigerian Business Bank Account. All seems OK - your Bank will 'credit' the money and after checking all is OK for a week or two, you keep your 10% or 20% 'commission' and send the rest off to the scam artist.

A month or two later the scan artists friend (who works in the Nigerian Bank) will 'discover' that the cheque is a 'fake' !

The Nigerian Bank will 'reverse' the transaction, and so will your Bank.

Since you already sent the money off, you end up with an overdraft ...

The person who wrote the cheque that bounces is liable (not reliable - means something quite different) Which cheques do you believe are scams ? If someone makes a cheque out to you, and there are not sufficient funds in the bank to cover it, that's fraud.

Be wary of cashing any check that you aren't sure of. I think you need to provide more info, though, in order for people to understand the situation.
