A headhunter is kind of a middle man. They work with unemployed professionals (upper management, ceo's, scientists) and companies that have openings in such high up positions. When you're looking for a new senior vice president, or ceo, you don't go to a regular employment agency. You go to a headhunter, who studies your company, studies people who might fit perfectly (even ones who are currently employed) and goes and makes them an offer.

A recruitment consultant - they are usually used for top jobs in companies. It's a way of poaching the best people from their current positions - the 'applicant' is chosen by the headhunter for a job rather than the person applying for a job themselves.

In general, headhunters (agency recruiters) are good if you match your skill set to their focus. A good agency will be brutally honest with you about the likelihood of them placing you. Because they work on commission. And that means if your not working, they're not getting paid. So they are motivated to find the right fit. You want to interview an agency just like you would a direct hire job. if you find the right match, they will expose you to opportunities that you might not see any other way. Agencies work best for people who have flexibility, are approachable, coachable and are good listeners. And the better your skills/background, the more valuable you are to them.
