I am trying to put 4x4 fence posts in for a privacy fence. I am a woman and up to this point have not needed anyones help to get the fence up. About a third of the way through I had to stop to remove a small stump from some kind of evergreen tree. I am putting the fence panels up as I get the posts in. I know that's not the way it's supposed to be done but thats typical for me. Long and short ruined 3 saws trying to get the stump and finally spent hours with a hatchet chipping it out one inch of wood at a time. Now I am digging the holes and the roots are in the way. A landscaper has been saying that he would come and dig the holes out but has been unreliable at best. Another reason is he says that I CAN'T do it myself. Me, My Sister and a good idea about how to solve the problem.
Please Help!!

If you can't work the roots out by hand rent a electric post hole digger from the hardware store. Its like a large drill they use in oil fields. If you can't then see if you can shorten that section of fence around the tree stump so that you have the stump dead center between two holes. Might look a little odd but you could put a gate there on the short section or a trellis to hide it.

You could rent a stump grinder from a tool rental place. I think it is something you should be able to handle on your own.
