I was told by an English Professor that "I were" was used many times in far-fetched ideas, such as if "If I were a rich man," "If I were President." Now if any of the presidential candidates said it, he (or she) would say "If I was President."

Depends on how you're using it, e.g., "I was going to the store" is correct. "If I were you, I wouldn't do that." is also correct.
